There are actors who become stars, and then there are actors who transform every character into a lived experience. Vicky Kaushal belongs firmly in the second category. Over the last decade, he has evolved from a promising newcomer into one of Hindi cinema’s most dependable and versatile performers. Whether playing a grieving lover, a conflicted soldier, or a revolutionary driven by pain and purpose, Kaushal has consistently brought emotional honesty to the screen.

On his 38th birthday, it is the perfect time to revisit five performances that not only shaped his career but also redefined modern Bollywood acting. These roles proved that charisma alone is not enough — depth, vulnerability, and conviction are what truly make an actor unforgettable.

1. Sardar Udham — The Performance That Cemented His Legacy

Among all his performances, Kaushal’s portrayal in Sardar Udham stands tallest. Directed by Shoojit Sircar, the film chronicled the life of revolutionary Udham Singh, who avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

What made Kaushal extraordinary here was his restraint. He did not rely on loud speeches or exaggerated patriotism. Instead, he communicated grief, rage, trauma, and loneliness largely through silence and expressions. The performance demanded emotional maturity, and Kaushal delivered with remarkable control.

The haunting sequences around the Jallianwala Bagh massacre remain some of the most emotionally devastating moments in contemporary Indian cinema. Critics and audiences alike praised the actor for disappearing completely into the role. Many viewers and film communities continue to regard it as one of the finest biographical performances in recent Bollywood history.

2. Raazi — Humanity Beyond Borders

In Raazi, Kaushal played Iqbal Syed, a Pakistani army officer married to an Indian spy portrayed by Alia Bhatt. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film was a tense espionage drama, but at its core, it was also a tragic love story.

What made Kaushal’s role memorable was the dignity and warmth he brought to Iqbal. In lesser hands, the character could have become a stereotypical antagonist. Instead, Kaushal portrayed him with compassion and emotional intelligence. His chemistry with Bhatt added emotional weight to the film, making the climax even more heartbreaking.

The performance proved that Kaushal could hold his own opposite established stars while still bringing nuance to a supporting role. His ability to humanise a character caught between loyalty and love became one of the film’s greatest strengths.

3. Masaan — The Arrival of a Powerful Talent

Long before blockbuster success, Kaushal announced himself with Masaan, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan. The film explored caste, loss, love, and aspirations in small-town India.

As Deepak Chaudhary, a young man from a lower-caste background navigating first love and devastating heartbreak, Kaushal delivered a performance filled with raw vulnerability. The famous line, “Ye dukh kahe khatam nahi hota,” eventually became a cultural reference, but the emotional truth behind it is what made it unforgettable.

Kaushal perfectly captured the innocence of young love and the crushing pain of sudden tragedy. His understated acting style stood out in an industry often dominated by dramatic excess. Masaan was not merely a debut success; it was the arrival of a serious actor capable of extraordinary emotional depth.

4. Uri: The Surgical Strike — The Rise of a Mainstream Star

If Masaan introduced the actor, Uri: The Surgical Strike turned him into a mainstream phenomenon. Playing Major Vihaan Singh Shergill, Kaushal combined intensity, discipline, and charisma in a military action drama inspired by the 2016 surgical strikes.

The film became a massive commercial success and established Kaushal as a bankable leading man. His energetic screen presence, physical transformation, and emotionally charged performance resonated strongly with audiences.

The now-iconic line “How’s the Josh?” became a nationwide catchphrase, further embedding the film into popular culture. Beyond the action and patriotism, Kaushal also portrayed the emotional burden of a soldier coping with personal loss and national duty. The role demonstrated his ability to balance mass appeal with sincere acting.

5. Manmarziyaan — Flawed, Chaotic, and Real

In Manmarziyaan, directed by Anurag Kashyap, Kaushal portrayed Vicky Sandhu, an impulsive and commitment-phobic DJ trapped in a complicated love triangle.

This was perhaps one of his most relatable performances. Unlike heroic or morally upright characters, Vicky Sandhu was immature, emotional, insecure, and often frustrating. Yet Kaushal infused the character with such honesty that audiences empathised with him despite his flaws.

The actor captured the confusion of modern relationships with remarkable authenticity. His emotional breakdowns, playful charm, and inability to make decisive choices felt deeply real. The performance highlighted Kaushal’s range and his willingness to embrace imperfect characters rather than conventional heroes.

A Career Built on Reinvention

One of the most impressive aspects of Kaushal’s career is his refusal to stay confined to a single image. From intense dramas and patriotic films to romance and comedy, he has continuously experimented with genres and characters. Audiences admire him not just because he delivers hits, but because he consistently brings sincerity to every role.

At a time when Bollywood often relies heavily on spectacle and star power, Kaushal represents a refreshing return to performance-driven cinema. His journey from Masaan to Sardar Udham reflects an actor constantly evolving, challenging himself, and raising the standards of mainstream acting.

As he turns 38, Kaushal stands at a fascinating stage in his career — already accomplished, yet seemingly far from his peak. If these performances are any indication, the best may still be ahead.
